Free One-Day Expungement Event in Downtown Wichita

If you are interested in a clean slate through expungement in Kansas but don’t know if you qualify, a free event this Friday between 10:30 AM to 5 PM at the Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. Second will help people determine whether they qualify to have their criminal record sealed.

Kansas Legal Services and other organizations will review criminal cases—pro bono—to figure out if a person’s convictions can be sealed under Kansas law and help them take the first step of the expungement process.

Anyone—no matter their income level—who has been convicted in Kansas municipal, state, or juvenile court can attend. If a person is eligible, he/she can either seek an expungement on their own or obtain free legal services from a volunteering lawyer.

Common types of convictions eligible for expungement in Kanas include:

On the other hand, felonies such as homicide, manslaughter, and most sex crimes are not eligible for expungement.

In order to qualify for expungement, you must have served your entire sentence including probation or parole, paid all fees and fines owed, and finished waiting either three or five years to become eligible for expungement in the state. A person cannot be convicted of a felony within the last two years or has a pending felony case.

Everyone who attends must bring all documents related to their criminal cases to the event. Common examples such documents include copies of court records and criminal background checks.

Additionally, seeking expungement with the state court costs $200, while Wichita Municipal court costs $90. Other jurisdictions have different filing fees.

Attendants also have the option of participating in a study led by Harvard Law School’s Access to Justice Lab and Kansas Legal Services to examine how expunging criminal records impact job and housing opportunities.
